It is very easy to use.

So far I have only used her for music and as an alarm clock. I just have to call her name and tell her to play a certain song or music by a certain singer, or music of a certain kind, such as country or Christmas music. I have not used it for other questions or information yet.

    Replaced My Tall Echo…

I was so sad to find out my tall, cylinder original Echo died and I traded it in. I’m lucky she decided to do it for Black Friday. This Dot is such an upgrade from the previous ones. The sound is fantastic and easy to install. The ONLY thing I didn’t like is the adapter cord is white and it doesn’t matter what color you purchase. I switch my cord out with another Dot so it would be black. I’m a little OCD when it comes to small details.

    good for any room

I didn’t want to upgrade to a smart home but this makes it easy to control lights in the house or through the app. anywhere. The announcement system works well and drop in calling feature through the app. to any device in the house. No need to wait for someone to answer a phone.

    My 2nd Echo dot 🙂

Got a new one to replace my echo I bought in 2021 because it wouldn’t reset…seems like it got stuck on an update. This one seems to be working fine so far, I like it. My ring doorbell is connected to it so it tells me when someone is at the door 🙌🏾

    Excelente amiga

Improve packaging to avoid temptations of theft.

The quality of service and product is great, it works as described and it arrived in time and manner, the only “recommendation” could sounds a bit “strange”: These days there are a lot of stolen products, specially when the buyer is not at home. I recommend that for this type of product in particular (Alexa), where it is easy to identify the content and anyone would be interested in having the item, package it in a better way so that the content is not easy to identify, besides that I am very happy with it 🙂

    5th purchase

Great gift. We now have five. Little by little they’ve become part of our daily life and we don’t even use them to their fullest capability. I laughed when he told me to order another one for a spare. He is sold on their usefulness.I couldn’t sleep without mine playing soothing sounds all night.

    So easy!

I’m a 72 yr old grandmother. I’m not especially tech smart , but this little fella was SO easy to set up even I could do it. I love that it will read to me from my kindle books ! Something I wasn’t expecting. I hesitated to buy one in the past because I thought it would be to complicated for me. It’s NOT ! And at this price, I just ordered another one for the bedroom. Love it !

    Nice Garage Tool

I love mine so I bought this for my hubby to use in the garage. He builds transmissions and so many times his hands are greasy and dirty. This is very handy for him to keep a constant list of parts he needs to order without having to stop and wipe his hands off to write something down. I use mine in the house constantly for reminders and to keep a shopping list. This is a huge help to anyone who multi tasks and needs to remind themselves of important meetings, appointments etc. I just have Alexa remind me of thins while I’m having my morning coffee. She is truly a great help!

    Buy it!

Love my Echo Dot. I’m a massage therapist and this makes it so easy. “Alexa — Play Liquid Mind.” I have a $5 a month subscription to Amazon Music which gives me access to this playlist and others. I also have the older version in my livingroom. The best perks for me are simply my Alexa reminder to take my trash out on Tuesday mornings. LOL! I’m also contantly asking Alexa questions while I’m cooking. “Alexa — How long to roast cauliflower florets?” This Echo Dot is currently HALF PRICE for Black Friday! (I have never paid full price for any of my Echo Dots. I just wait for a sale.)

    Bang for the Buck!

I was excited about this purchase. I have never owned an Alexa device. Setup was a breeze once I downloaded the app. I connected everything through the app and can now control the Tv’s and lights. I know I sound outdated. How long have these been out? I just never saw the need for one, but I do now. I can’t wait to keep building onto it and having a smart home. Good buy for the price.

Had the old dot, this dot is far better

Up until we got this one, I had been using the old dot. Still functioning well enough. However, getting this new one a few days ago, was an upgrade for sure. Got it on the black friday sale and it is totally worth it. The sound quality is great. We use alexa for simple stuff; music, spotify, simple questions, timer..for the the most part. But everything we need it for is worth the price for sure.

    Great Sound, Still Problems

I got this on Prime Day on sale and I have to say the sound is wonderful. It’s the time of year when I play Christmas music all the time and I wanted it for our bedroom, especially to play instrumental themes before bed.I am still having the same complaint with this as I do about our Echo Show 5. Sometimes you have to BELLOW at the damn thing to get it to pay attention to you. Last night I gave it a nightly routine command, “Reading Time,” which times 15 minutes for us to read, and instead it wanted to read a book to us. The 1st and 2nd generation Dots were a lot more sound sensitive. I never had either of them constantly comment, “I didn’t understand, can you say that again.” For God’s sake, make the voice recognition more sensitive again. Even a bird chirping outside will interfere with the new Echo devices understanding you. It also responds to my husband’s voice better than it does to mine. Are the new Echo units now gender-biased????

    Great little speaker!

The Echo is a great addition to our automated products! It has made it easy to connect all the lights in our house including the porch light! The speaker itself is awesome! The sound quality is better than expected and top-notch! I have used the drop-in feature to communicate with my husband at home while I was at work and even control the lighting at home while we are both away!

    Easy set up

I love this! I use it for a kitchen timer, play music with no interruptions. I like how low profile it is; the clarity is awesome and set up was so easy. The price was so low that’s why we bought it figured try it out at that price. I would recommend this to anyone looking to simplify your life or just to play music nonstop with no interruptions and commercials like Pandora (unless you subscribe)

    Nice Sound

This was a replacement for the first echo device that I had to see if it can respond easier. My problem with almost every one of these is how sometimes I can repeat the name it has over and over before it responds but it will hear a word in a conversation or from the tv and light up and start answering a question that was not asked.

A bit of a learning curve is in order.

After purchasing my first black Echo Dot I was sold on the idea to have another in my bedroom. I brought the clock version. It takes time to learn how to operate the system and it’s all falling in line. I like that I added AMAZON MUSIC and it all works well with my other music apps. I’ve been complimented on the sound quality by friends who are quite surprised by it. Yes I do sometimes get frustrated with Alexia but she’s always right. I have to learn how to communicate with (her). 🤣🤣🙄

    What’s not to like

I purchased this on black Friday. The price was great. this is my second Gen 5 dot. the sound quality is great and it is easy to install. Since it’s on sale I expect a new version isn’t far off, but I am extremely pleased with the devise and recommend it to any Alexa user.

Multi-Music Player mystery solved, how to select more than one echo if you cannot

Alexa Echo SpeakersMulti-room Music issuesI found a solution to not being able to get more than one speaker to work at a time, paired, or set up a “Multi-Room Music” in the Alexa app. This solution also fixed my inability to get Apple enabled devices connected into HomeKit, or even Google Nest Hubs to set up, period.Quick answer: Deselect “Enable Wireless Isolation” when activating your 2.4 Wi-Fi broadcast on your router.I also took all speakers off guest wifi. But I’ll try to put them back to see if that is necessary now.Back story: Months of issues with HomeKit, (only weeks with Echo Multi-Room Music), I gave up trying and decided to try Alexa and Google to replace my Apple smart home efforts. I spent way too much time. After the fix, I’ll live a blended tech life. I’ll give a quick answer, followed by my backstory: Last week I was at my wits end in utter frustration over three major roadblocks. I acquiesced and decided to try Alexa because I couldn’t get almost any of my Apple HomeKit enabled devices into HomeKit, except for new Apple products. I knew it had to be something small I was missing. Alexa was sooooo easy and quick to connect to everything, before I figured out the fix. (I dislike the echo show advertising, their echo speakers are better.) While they seemed a breeze to connect everything, for some reason I couldn’t get more than one echo speaker to work at a time. I was continually blocked from setting up Multi-Room Music or even connect a pair to play together.  Hundreds of tries. I deleted, reset, rebooted, spent over 4 hours with Comcast yesterday (thankfully a Boston native who did not put me on hold every minute like certain countries) getting my internet working again. I had rebooted my modem and router so many times, my computer got molasses slow and I feared I went too farIn interest I also decided to try a few Google nest hub speakers. Black Friday had great sales on all this stuff. Trying to set up googles hub 7 was impossible. It wouldn’t stay connected to the internet for more than a split second before “Something went wrong” message. Probably over 70 tries. (Google is better than Echo Show. Apple HomePod mini sounds crisper and better than Amazon echo 4 and mini 5’s. But Alexa is way friendlier to interact with verbally, and price point, well…)Frustration. Thursday, I broke down and bought my first Apple Homepod Mini to see if I can get that working and see if it works better than the Apple TV 4k Ethernet connection. The HomePod mini gave me a hint how to solve all these l connection and internet blocks. The HomePod mini kept telling me that I don’t have “peer-to-peer connection” allowed on my network. Now, I’m a little techy, but it took three days (ehem, months) to finally take a chance on a for granted setting I always enable on my netgear router. It’s the blasted first Wireless page when enabling a wifi broadcast.I had to deselect “Enable Wireless Isolation.”That was it. It solved every issue I have come across with smart home tech for the last 4 months, ..year.For the months that I could not solve these problems, Amazons Multi-Player Music issue made me dig deeper. I did not find anyone suggesting this particular router setting, so I thought I’d share with ppl. Tonight, I finally am able to simultaneously play music on all of my Echo speakers, connect my HomeKit enabled and Google nest hubs.I’m not sure what this will do for my/your internet security. But I’m going with it for now. And I’ll try to put all devices back onto guest Wi-Fi. I’ll never really leave Apple, but after interacting with other smart speakers, it’s probably not going to be my main go to for speaker or answers to questions. Or I’ll just get too creeped out by Google and Amazon invasiveness and acquiesce with Apple instead. Echo Dot 5 (this is such a sprite, great speaker!)Echo 4are my favorite for Amazon EchoEcho Studioseems the least smart, most deaf, quiet, combative, difficult to interact with, of the three speakers. Hopefully the Multi-Room music fix will improve my experience with itEcho Show 8Meh. Far too much and annoying advertising of non-solicited or wanted advertisements. Least user friendly screen to work with. It sits unplugged for the most part. I mostly got this for a friend who visits who wants a YouTube fireplace playing on the tv.SIDE NOTE on other Smart Home Amazon (online, or physical store) products, related to this topic:I have been pleased with Smartbot plugs, switches and app, the Levoit 600s air purifiers and app (app goes by VeSync), and Lutron Caséta Light Switches and Dimmers, and hub. Lutron has the most stable and reliable app out there. I was fine running their apps separately. They are very nice, better than the big 3 apps. Well, back to listening to music throughout my house instead of one or two rooms. Joy!

Another great smart home purchase, to say the least.

My previous Echo Dot, purchased back in 2018, was a third-generation. It was a white shuffleboard stone covered in cloth and it is amazing. I’ll never say it’s not; in fact it’s so amazing that I passed it on to my mom and she enjoys it a great deal. So, my main motivation for purchasing this, the fifth generation issued in 2022 – aside from familiarity with the brand – was I needed a Matter hub so my then-incoming Nanoleaf smart lightbulbs could work with my voice. But of course it is so much more.First thing I see is that the Echo Dot is no longer a white shuffleboard stone but is a smaller, navy blue sphere. Aside from being my favorite color, and thus very pleasing to look at, I find it that it is not practical any longer to mount on my wall because of its increased focus on the forward firing speaker; if I had mounted it, it would not be effective in spreading out to my entire room – the top of the speaker is reserved for the buttons which were present on the third-generation: volume up, volume down, action/wake and mute microphone, which leave no room for a speaker in that area. So it sits pretty on my side table facing the rest of my room, and does fine.First thing I hear is the sound quality is so much better than the third-generation Dot. The third-generation was okay in that regard, but it tended to sound a little overexposed when the volume was up high. Now, I don’t find myself connecting via Bluetooth to my sound bar nearly as much because the speaker quality is just that good. The quiet parts of music are quiet and calming the way they should be, but the bass thumps quite effectively, surprisingly for such a small and lightweight speaker. So after I’d established the smart speaker in my room for about a month, I felt the time was right to go ahead and get my Nanoleaf Essentials bulbs, to upgrade the ones that I had no longer been able to use for a year since they had stopped working with any voices assistants, to facilitate compatibility with the then upcoming network standard: Matter. I am very happy to say that Matter compatibility is there and it is wonderful.I can’t speak for the internal workings because I’m not an engineer; I will say – though I may be wrong about this – that I believe it would be more rocky if I did not have a Thread Border Router already in the form of my Nanoleaf shapes controller; I have the shapes arrangement atop my desk called Dragon, and it has worked wonderfully for me since around last September, and only – at this point anyway – required regular firmware updates to be compatible with ongoing technology. Now, I’ll tell you the procedure for adding the Nanoleaf Essentials bulbs to Alexa via Matter – I would assume by extension any Matter device, providing you have a thread border router like I mentioned before. After adding the bulbs to the iOS Nanoleaf app as normal – also updating the firmware for each bulb via said app! I have a feeling that was very important – add them also to Alexa via the Add Device flow, one at a time. There was a menu item that showed itself at the top telling me that it had detected each new bulb on my network and I only had to select that item to add it, scan the QR code on the sticker that came with the bulbs (I applied the sticker to a sheet of paper and labeled it according to the positions of the bulbs) and wait just a bit for it to be connected and it just works!Another new feature which the third-generation did not have is a temperature sensor! After a short period of calibration after plugging the device in, Alexa will be able to tell you the temperature of the room that it is situated in! I ask her for this often when I’m trying to determine how best to cool my room during these hot summer months. When my door’s closed during the day, my room can get up to mid 80s, which is horrible, but with the door open to allow a draft and breeze, the temperature’s equalized with the rest of the house and I get mid to upper 70s which is much better. There is an ultrasound presence sensor, which sounds not unlike sonar, which I have not had a use for yet, but I imagine routines can be enabled or suppressed with its use.One borderline negative thing I will say about it which I’m okay with because, again, I have Bluetooth connections – they eliminated the 3.5 mm jack to save internal space inside the device, so you will no longer be able to directly connect external speakers, as I did at one point before I had to change that arrangement.Once again, Amazon comes through with flying colors with their products, helping make our homes smarter and more amazing and just better to live in! Get this speaker if you are looking to build a smart home, and for best results, get more than one so you can use the awesome “drop-in” intercom system, and truly awaken the potential of the smart home!

    Works pretty good

The most upsetting thing for me was getting it set up. I had to toggle between my phone, my computer, and the Dot. Just when I thought I finally got it set up, the connection to the internet failed and I had to start over. I do admit that I’m not the most techy person, but I’ve worked with computers daily since 1994, so I’m not illiterate either. I was instructed that I could set up things before the Echo Dot arrived, which I did. I got the app on my phone and went through all those instructions. But when the Dot finally arrived, I got a message stating that all of my previous setup had to be reset. So I had to start over again with that. I waited so long for it to find something to pair with that I gave up on that completely. So at this moment, it’s not really paired with anything except my phone. Maybe one day I’ll try that again. I did ask Alexa if she could turn on my phone, and the response was that she wasn’t paired with anything. So I don’t know what that means. The bottom line for me is that it’s not always that easy to get this thing up and running. I did purchase this because I’m starting to have some irritating memory problems. I am hoping that Alexa can help keep me in the know on where I put things. LOL I did test that out by using the command “remember” as this is what the internet recommended. She changed that to “Do you want a new stickie note?” Ok, so the command is ‘new stickie note’, but it works. I found that I can’t whisper her name either because her hearing is far better than mine!! I think in the end I will be happy with it, but it was a royal pain to get it set up and the set up still is not finished. I will persevere though until it is.

    Very impressed… 👍

I wasn’t expecting much when I saw the price of this 5th generation Echo Dot. Besides, I was a bit concerned about the small size of the Dot compared to my 4th generation Dot, and the very affordable price.Got it yesterday and thanks to Amazon allowing me to preconfigure it while it was being shipped. Upon receipt I just plugged in the power and waited for about 5-10 seconds, without any input from me.After the light stabalized, I was able to use it without any issues. The sound was a bit thin, compared to my 4th gen unit. After 5minutes, I turned it off for the night. This morning, I played it again. The highs were crisper, fairly musical, the lows were not as full as the 4th gen unit. This is understandable as low frequency depends on the size of the speaker. So I placed the new unit behind the TV, letting the sound bouncing between the back of the TV and the wall to enhance the low frequencies. As in my days of using hifi stereo systems, new speakers need to be played continuously for a few days to loosen the speaker diaphragm. In other words, the diagram material being new and will be a bit stiff and not being able to flex to produce sounds freely. This is my 1day impression of this 5th generation Echo Dot. Not bad. I’ll provide another update a month later.Good job, Amazon 👍11/27/23Update…After using it to listen music continuously since I got the item, I liked the clearer highs but wished the low frequency would be lower. I imagine due to the physical size of the unit, the woofer can only produce so much low frequencies. This is the basic law of physics. I really was torn between this 5th gen dot and my 4th gen unit. At the end of the day, I prefer the lower frequencies response of the 4th. Don’t let me influence you on my final choice. It boils down to personal preference. Nothing wrong with either model.Still recommend this 5th gen Echo Dot. The low price makes this a real bargain.

    Simple set up

I bought this for my kitchen / dining room area, as I have a 3rd gen “puck” style in my bedroom and a WiFi radio in my office. I would have bought another 3rd gen puck if they were available, but since they weren’t, I opted for the 5th gen one. I use the physical buttons a fair bit, and I like the button placement and tactile response on the 3rd gen better than on the 5th gen, but they are okay, just not as nice. Some of it is the flat surface area of the puck vs the round ball shape of the 5th gen i think. Sound is about equal on both units I would say, or maybe a bit crisper on the 3rd gen. I have adjusted the audio settings on both. It could have something to do with placement of each too, but both are very acceptable. Set up was a breeze and seamless. The 5th gen doesn’t seem to be as responsive as my 3rd gen, it takes just a 1/2 second to respond as compared to the 3rd gen. They both have an equally robust WiFi signal, so perhaps just a difference with the two, still, very good response all things considered. It was a bargain at $22.00 and I’m completely happy with it.

    Solved a unique problem.

Recently picked up one of these dots for my aging parents after my dad told me he was worried about my mom not being able to call emergency services if something were to happen to him. Without going into details, it would be much easier for my mom to wake Alexa and ask her to dial ‘911’, than to try and fiddle with the phone. My understanding is this feature is NOT available in all areas and requires certain steps within the app to setup. Keep this in mind.I also showed them how to use ‘lists,’ so they don’t forget anything while they are out shopping. Mom can set timers for cooking and reminders to take any medications. Dad can use her ability to give the weather forecast to plan any trips or outings. At my house, we use a number of various generations of dots primarily as an intercom. She comes loaded with helpful features (abilities without skills, such as weather forecast, list, timers, reminders), and you can always browse through her skills for more utilities and smart home integration.Privacy can be a concern for many. If you can trust the red mute, then you should have no problems. Others may decide to develop practices and disciplines regarding conversations that take place in the presence of a dot. Regardless of your level of alertness. Alexa can be very helpful in many ways.Oh, and she can fart. 🙂

It’s not just a tech marvel; it’s also incredibly stylish!

Dot Alexa – not only is it an absolute gem in terms of functionality, but it’s also super budget-friendly! 🌟 I snagged it last year for my brother without breaking the bank, and it’s been worth every penny. Also, it’s become an absolute favorite in our household! Not only does my brother love it, but even my parents have found joy in using it. They have a blast asking Alexa about the weather, and my mom has discovered a new partner in crime for her crossword puzzles. Alexa always comes through with those tricky words! It’s not just a tech marvel; it’s also incredibly stylish! The design is sleek and modern, making it a perfect fit for any home aesthetic. It’s been such a hit that this year, I’m planning to grab a few more for the rest of the family. The convenience and fun it brings to daily life are unmatched. If you’re ever on the lookout for a fantastic tech addition to your home, Dot Alexa is the way to go. With Christmas around the corner, it’s the perfect gift that won’t put a dent in your budget. I genuinely believe it’s a fantastic addition to any home, and the fact that it won’t break the bank makes it even more appealing.

    A great deal!

This is our third echo, second echo dot. We still use all three to control smart bulbs, set timers and reminders, conveniently look things up online (awesome at answering quick trivia-type questions), get daily weather updates, news briefings, etc. We typically use the larger echo to stream music, but I’m sure this one does a decent job considering how compact it is. We’ve definitely become spoiled by these devices. We’ve got the bigger echo in the family room and old echo dot in the kitchen. We didn’t set out to shop for a third for our in-home office, but it was a special bundle with a smart bulb (and we did want another smart bulb). There are so many features we aren’t even using… yet. And as we purchase more and more household electronics and appliances which include smart technology, it’s so convenient to have an echo to recognize and control them all.

Did Alexa get stupider or is it just me?

The product looks quite sharp. The design look is quite pleasant and the volume and sound quality are remarkably good for a unit the size of a softball. The WiFi range is lacking, severely. My office is the farthest room away from my router but she is the only device with connectivity issues. I have a 2012 laptop that gets 4 bars in the same spot. She gets about 2. The voice recognition software is very impressive. She can distinguish my voice clearly from others with a room full of several chatting people and music/tv going in the backround. I have a very odd accent as I’ve spent each quarter of my 40 years in a different corner of the United States but she seems to have adapted rather easily and rarely fails to understand a command on the first try. I pulled stars because despite all her new bells and whistles she seems to have lost quite a bit of her playfulness and more basic commands. When she misunderstands a command, she does not even get it close and I get a lot of the defacto “I’m sorry I can’t do that” responses to simple queries. When I was younger I remember sitting having an hour long smart-alec b.s. trash talking session with my uncle’s Alexa. This one is boring and no fun to joke around with. She also cannot retain instructions and preferences by voice. Some can be done via the app. But if I wanted to interact with the app on my phone, I wouldn’t have bought the pod. I’ve told her endless times that Spotify is my preferred music player, but unless I specify Spotify in the command she defers to Amazon music. Overall she’s become more Amazon’s than my own product. Much less independent. Amazon should be giving these away for free for the amount of permission and intrusions needed just to use her. It claims she can integrate with any Bluetooth audio device. This is a lie. She can scan and find her own products no problem but my expensive non-amazon Bluetooth audio devices are invisible to her. The Alexa accessories like light switches, cameras, speakers, thermostats are fairly cheap and basic and allow little to no user customization or expansion. The level of integration is also very basic. About as complex as simply getting a “clap-on/clap off” light switch. Now if there was a smart plug hub where I could plug in all my office devices and instruct her to power on my workstation upon entry to my office(meaning activate my computer, desk light, air conditioning, and interactive display) but leave the rest of my electrical devices plugged in there deactivated unless instructed otherwise, that would be neat. I’m also somehow quite uncomfortable with giving her access to any cameras in her home as we know Alexa has behaved as a spy and unauthorized gatherer of personal information in the past. This model has a “privacy mode” based on the honor system and a very reassuring red light to designate this. Yeah, trust is a hard thing to get back once you’ve betrayed it. She does not have a battery. This is a major design flaw. My 20 year old clock radio has a backup but my brand new Alexa does not. So every single time we lose power or I have to unplug her to move her, I have to go through the ENTIRE process of putting her back into setup mode, reconnecting her to my wifi. An absolute insufferable pain. Also, she does things for no apparent reason, which again makes me nervous. Normally when idle or not in a set mode, her base black out. Occasionally I will be watching her and she will just begin to pulse a color at the base for random periods of time for no explainable reason. I’ve asked her to explain herself and she plays dumb. Sometimes a song will come on in shuffle play that I will like and I will ask her afterwards to identify the last song she played. She cannot do this. I ask her to identify the last task I had her perform, she cannot do this. I ask her why she is blinking, she cannot do this. She can adjust her volume up or down one small phase at a time verbally, but mutes the music while executing the command but does not pause it. To go from very quiet to very loud is a process of about 30 seconds, 10 requests, and a starting over of the track. Overall she is limited, does not learn. Little to no AI, and is mostly an exercise in frustration rather than convenience. Another MAJOR design flaw, she cannot be made to respond only to my voice or to refuse a specific voice. We learned this the hard way with my young nephew who spent a good 20 minutes playing hit or miss demanding calls to names he was guessing from my address book and even our local police. A 5 year old is going to stupid things. A 5 year old is going to talk to and play with damn near anything that will play with it. How in god’s name did no one at Amazon think it a good idea to put a “parent” or “owner” mode where she answers only to my voice, or uses that amazing voice recognition software to single out and restrict a voice. Does anyone at Amazon have children? Or do they simply not like Amazon products either? If you are willing to do things her way, she can be an asset. If you want something that can adapt to and work with you, she’s a frustration and a liability. If you want an attractive centerpiece for your livingroom to impress your friends with your “smart house”, shes perfect. I thought newer would be better. Overall I’m dissapointed with this product and miss my echo dot.

    Music is better

Edit:(1 week later) music is significantly better but when I was playing music today, the bass blew out at volume 4:/ I was listening to a Spotify playlist, relaxing guitar, so not that much bass. Alexa couldn’t handle the bass from it….Such a bummer. Acoustic sound is still very good considering it can’t handle bass….Playing music on this is so much better! The older model Alexa was so terrible playing music, at volume 4 it was too loud and the speaker sounded like it was going to blow! The audio and bass is alot better! The only thing missing is the clock, we decided we didn’t need the one with the clock and we don’t but it’s nice to have. The black color is very sleek! Also when we placed our order to buy this new echo dot, I received an email asking if we’d like to setup the new echo so it’d be all ready to go when we hooked the echo up. That was pretty cool and didn’t know it could do that!

Added Second Echo Dot for Stereo

Just added second Echo Dot for stereo sound, and it is amazingly better! Worth doing if you listen to music using this equipment. And no, this does not sound like high dollar set-ups, but–not high dollar, after all. Next on my agenda is subwoofer set-up, and then I’ll have a great place-holder until such time as I can replace my dead “good” system. (BTW, I’m listening to orchestral music). Installation fairly straightforward:For stereo sound and improved music playback in the left and right channels, pair two supported Echo devices. Open the Alexa app . Select Devices . Select plus . Select Combine Speakers. Select Stereo Pair / subwoofer, and then follow the on-screen instructions.I really like that these are component devices that I can buy and install one at a time as my budget permits, and the sound improves with each addition.

“UPDATE 3” – It has some downsides but good overall.

FINAL UPDATE!!!If you have a dot already and you’re not in a rush to update you’re not missing out. The sound quality is better. Like most people I connect my dot to a Bluetooth speaker. So the updated sound quality is mute. The Eero installed mesh wifi is cool if you need to kill a dead zone. Definitely worth it ONLY IF you already have and Eero or plan on getting one. Tech support isn’t the best in this department. Read below. When I did get the tech support in the U.S. the knowledge of the Eero wifi was much better. The Tech Support they out source to foreign countries is terrible. They told me the Dot and the Eero don’t work together because I didn’t buy them together. Amazon was quick to give me a phone call after my review so know that they do read reviews and in good faith will do everything to rectify the problem (A huge plus for Amazon.)So the problem I had was not with the Echo Dot, but with the Eero wifi mesh extender. With the Eero it’s all about placement when it comes to these Echo dots. You want your Echo to be in the 5ghz range and NOT the 2.5Ghz. range. Do what you can to get the hub closer. It makes a HUGE difference. I did some digging online and found out that the Eero does well and placed up high also. I purchased a 100 foot cat5 network cable ($17). I Moved the Eero hub to the center of the house. I set it on top of a cabinet. The back room, where I was pulling 5-20mps is up to 432mps download. That’s without using the Eero extension on the Echo Dot.The dot has a motion sensor and tempurature sensor that works with my Smartthings Hub. I have not used them because I already have motion and temp sensors in this room that have active scenarios working.I’m going to keep this one and test the sensors a bit more and compare them to ones I have set up already.I would give this four stars but I can’t overlook the comedy of foreign tech support. This would’ve been a frustrating experience if I was pressed to get things working.ANOTHER UPDATE!!!!This junk is going back to the pit of hell it came from. Both of them. It’s a good idea but fails in its execution. The Eero built into these are random. Sometimes you connect, sometimes you don’t. I could stand a foot away from it and it will not connect to the Eero. This is a BRAND NEW product. If you buy this know that you are part of the BETA TEST crowd. You are the guinea pigs that Amazon is perfecting this on. So you pay your money so they can test this out.On one of my many calls to tech support they told me they only had very little training on these. The old wifi worked better than this.IT IS NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME!!!!!!!! WAIT TILL THEY WORK THE KINKS OUT!!!!New update!!!They don’t know what the hell they are doing at tech support.Stupid stuff I was told.1. It will only work when you buy them together. (The Eero and Echo dot with Eero installed.)Firmware needs to update. “How do I do that?” I ask. “I escalated the ticket to a higher level tech support.” I hung up. Called back and got a different tech. They told me to update simply tell Alexa,”Alexa, update firmware.” Like I told the other tech, the firmware is updated. Two tech calls ago the guy did it.So now they say they gotta call me back because they need to figure it out. LOL!!!!!STOOOOPID!This gets worse and worse. So now I’m on the phone AGAIN with tech support. This idiot told me the Echo Dot with EERO won’t work with the Eero mesh I purchased because ,”I did not buy them together.” What special kind of stupid is this!! So Eero is putting their name on products that do NOT work with other EERO products. I asked to speak to someone else. I’ve been on hold for 20min.Amazon got something’s right but this is a mess.Tech support has no clue on how to fix this. I’m going to return this crap. But now I want to see how dumb tech support is.They asked which model do I have. There’s only one with EERO in it.She didn’t know that.Ten minutes later and I’m back on the phone with tech support. Signal drops constantly. Tech support no help on this one hot piece of garbage!!!!I spent some time on the phone with tech support. This had to be configured so the Eero would work. I’m getting good download speeds now. I hope it lasts. The sound is a bit of an improvement. More bass and highs. It’s not easy to set up the Eero. They had to. Get inside and configure it to work. A hassle but it works. Tech support for Amazon can’t help. Call the Eero hot line. This won’t even hold the wi-fi signal. My router is the the living-room. The download speeds standing next to the Eero mesh wifi is great. 550mps.In the office I installed the New Echo dot with eero installed for mesh. Without the Echo dot I’m getting 91mps. That’s just off the Eero transmitting from the living room. Better than I expected. Now when I hook the Echo Dot up and I run the test.I get a whopping 0.14 mbps download. I’m sitting a foot away from it.Total garbage.

Feedback on the Alexa app and integrations….

I have an old Echo and added a dot and 4 pops to cover the rooms in my house. I live with my disabled mother and sister who need to be able to call me for help. This was the best voice activated “intercom” type system that I could figure out. But there are some annoying issues with the app.1. DND. I should be able to determine which parts of the Alexa interactions I can silence during the night. I want alarms, timers and announcements to freely interrupt me but not notifications. With DND announcements do not play. So I can’t use DND but I get woken up by stupid notification chimes.2. The newest app update removed the “listen” from the bottom of the menu. Now I have to tap around more to play things.3. The app does not show my audible collections or allow any kind of searching … I have to scroll and scroll and scroll.4. Alexa quite often does not play the selection I tell it to when I speak the commands. I don’t know why it can’t find what I’m telling it. When I look at the history it has exactly what what I spoke, but plays the wrong thing. (mostly selections in my Audible Acct).5. The app is super slow and sluggish to load. No matter how many times I re-install. (Android)6. I have one network on 2 SSIDs because I’m using an extender in my office and wanted to separate my devices. Even tho it’s the same network (IPs are served from the main router) the Echo devices will not work together — so the device in my office has a weak connection since I have to use the main house SSID. This is just dumb.

The 5th Generation Echo Dot Rocks!

This is my second 5th generation dot. I bought one last year when they first came out. On their own, I think the price is a bit high. I have an Echo Show and ad the Echo Dot. For Amazon’s Black Friday sale, They were over 50% off so it was a great time to buy one.We also have a Ring Doorbell and the Ring Alarm. The Ring Alarm uses Amazon’s Eero Wi-Fi. One of the great things about these 5th Generation Dots is they include Eero wi-fi extenders. So, we have one in the basement where we have wi-fi enabled exercise equipment and a TV we only use for streaming. The other is in our bedroom. We’re very pleased with our purchase. We have one smart speaker made from another large brand. The Echos are much better.

They do everything they say they will do and probably a lot more – A few annoyances

Just put 3 of these in a 3 level home along with all the various other bulbs and devices. They are insanely easy to set up and they find new devices very well.I have two main issues with them:Even though they are on separate floors sometimes the wrong one will respond even though I’m standing in the same room with one. For example, I’m in the family room and ask it something and I can hear the one in the basement respond. Or I am standing in the family room next to a new smart light bulb and ask Alexa to find the new device, the one in the family will respond and speak but the bulb will get “connected” to the echo in the basement. All three of them have been given different “Names”… Alexa, Ziggy, and whatever I named the one on the second floor. Interestingly the one on the second floor never seems to get confused and respond when it shouldn’t, the issue seems confined to the family room and basement devices. Internet says to turn down the volume on the one that shouldn’t respond. So I did that, to almost 0% but it doesn’t’ seem to matter. Internet says to turn off communications on the one that shouldn’t answer, did that and it still responds. Internet says move them further apart or don’t put them in rooms “on top” of each other. Will try that.Second issue are the constant notifications and various noises. I just figured out how to turn them off within the Alexa app on the phone and there were an incredible number of separate notifications to turn off.

Can’t do without it in the kitchen

The Echo Dot is invaluable to me in the kitchen. Its hands-free capabilities are great for multitasking, especially when juggling various cooking tasks. The ability to set multiple timers and label them provides a convenient way to keep track of different cooking processes simultaneously – very useful during thanksgiving. This feature ensures that you never miss a critical step in your recipes, making the cooking experience more efficient and stress-free.The Echo Dot’s unit conversion is so convenient and practical. Easily converting units of measurement ensures accurate ingredient proportions. You can even look up recipes! Whether you need a quick substitution or want to try a new dish, the Echo Dot is awesome.

wow! where was this thing all my life

I wasn’t sure what the hype was all about.. Easy breezy idiot proof set up. Simply download Alexa app, plug in your “dot” and it just guides you through.Took me like 30 seconds. Only issue I had was to link it with sirius XM but that is because of Sirius XM app (saw others struggle with it). Sound system is soooo crisp, that it surpasses my more expensive Bose stereo that I paid $$$ years ago for. Can’t believe such a small gadget can have that much surround sound feel.. It’s like I installed a built in sound system. Small, inconspicuous, fits in the palm of your hand that it does’t take any space.; like a small mug.Now that I saw what this little gadget can do I want to get everything Alexa compatible..After I bought it, price went down on “deals” so I bought more for gifts and more for me.. I use it mostly to play music, haven’t tried to link it to my honeywell Alexa compatible thermostat just because, like Serius XM ‘s app, honeywell’s wifi control is not easy to set up and, from what I read, not so reliable either, so I figured I keep using it as manual and not try to get too fancy. But Echo dot is awesome!

    Ok for the most part.

This is now my third 4th gen Echo Dot. I have another two around my apartment and then also an Echo Fire TV Cube. This new dot was pretty much ok right out of the box, however ran into an issue where for whatever reason the Alexa app wasn’t showing the ultrasound settings of this dot. The ultrasound setting was just gone from the app. It was still there however for my other 4th gen dots. Idk after a firmware update plus then uninstalling the Alexa app and reinstalling it the setting still wasn’t there for the new dot, however then suddenly the next day it was lol Just like poof it showed up! A little weird. I use the ultrasound capabilities of these dots to turn on my smart lights automatically when I walk into a room. Anyhoo, haven’t had any more issues. Yet.

    Needs inmprovement disappointed

I have multiple devices. Linked so when I play each can play same song simultaneously. One will occasionally stop. Or if you ask Alexa too many questions or commands one or more will stop playing. Pain in the butt. Also shouldn’t gave to pay for more than 1 to be operated separately for girls to hear their plsylist andysrlf yo play my playlist in my room. Also should not have to pay to listen to the playlist I create without having to listen to songs NOT in my playlist. It’s changed, Now I ask Alexa to play one of my playlist and it plays crappy @$$ “similar songs” songs not in my playlist. Basically it plays what the hell it wants and almost none of your saved songs. Now I’m constantly ask it to skip. These units aren’t cheap and yet we can’t play songs solely in our playlists.

This is a great start to a smart home

I was really excited when I got this to start the home automation process for our house. We have a loft area apt and have now 3 alexa devices. Besides from being a bit laggy at some points where Alexa just takes more than a minute to execute a command that I have set this works as expected. However there is one flaw that is very annoying.Because we are in a lofted space our bedroom is very close to our living room, I have this one in the bedroom and the white one with a digital clock in the living room. When I say Alexa “some action” the bedroom one does listen to what I say, however it will only respond on the living room one for some reason. Not the biggest problem for us cause again, they are pretty close and the sound travels. But I would like it to ensure that it responds from the one that I was the closest to.I read posts about this and it is an on-going issue with Amazon, hence the reason for my 4 stars, however this issue did not happen always, its been working as expected ever since I got it until now for about 2-3 weeks. I searched everywhere to come up with a solution. Finally I just caved and applied the band aid fix that everyone was doing “Switching the wake command” So now my living room is Alex and my bedroom is Echo to wake. This was challenging to get a hang of for me but for my wife even worse lol.All in all, this is a good product with minor faults. If you are looking to start your home automation journey this would be a good start!

    Be careful!

As a happy owner of a Echo 8 show, Echo 5 show and a Echo dot I was having difficulty with my Echo dot for which I use daily with the awesome battery charger base that I ordered for it. I ordered today a new Echo dot 5 as mine was not charging properly. It was delivered but doesn’t fit the charger on the base I paid $40 for that fit other Echo. Only 1 plug inlet. Great product but I bought specifically to fit my wireless battery back up, NOT COMPATIBLE ( FOR MAKING MORE MONEY FOR THEM IM SURE)

I wish I had Ordered this Sooner

I have been listening to the very first Alexis (generation 1) for years now. A situation came up that I really needed a second Alexia, one in my bedroom to play white noise, and another in the living room to play my favorite music. While the generation 1 has been excellent and is still working fine, I always wanted better music sound quality such as a deeper bass. What a different in music quality with this Alexia. The music is full, clear soubd with just the right amount of deep bass. What a joy! I just wished I had bought a later generation sooner! I have it set up for white noise with the gen 1 in my bedroom to help me sleep (I have fan noise on), and music in the living room where I can listen to music as I relax and I also like it when I work on grading student papers and assignments. A few years ago I even bought an external speaker for the gen 1, but was never totally successful. I can really see the improvements in this device and honestly, I really appreciate it! Thanks Amazon!

Inexpensive assistant and good entertainment source. Great aid for elderly.

It was very easy to set up and use. The Echo dot speaker is of good quality for its tiny 4 inch around, fits nicely in any decor. Alexa herself is a reliable reminder of your daily tasks and helps keep my day running smoothly. She can be entertaining and a good source of little trivia. I had one set up for my elderly mom at her place, to remind her to take her medicines or to do certain tasks. When she is lonely, she asks Alexa to tell her some history or play music for her. The device gives you a lot of service and entertainment for a nominal price. Highly recommended.

This Echo Dot 5th genertion is VERY USEFUL.

I really laughed at myself for even considering this Echo Dot. What do I need a personal assistant for? But Amazon had such a great sale and low price I could not pass this up. And I am glad I did not. Not only is it the fastest way to get the weather and the traffic conditions, but I set reminders all the time, and timers, and stopwatches. The grocery list is great, to add things to it, have Alexa read what is on the list, and print out the list when I am ready to go shopping. Since I have Amazon Prime (and it is well worth it), I can play a wide range of music free, and it sounds pretty good. I really am pleased with this Echo Dot 5th Generation with Alexa.

Sound Quality on this is just great!!! They really did a great job on incorporating the sound quality into this small package. If you have an Amazon account the ease of this to setup is pretty much automatic. Once I powered it on, it connected to the WiFi automatically and went through a quick tutorial of things you can ask Alexa to do.I did purchase the Mandalorian Stand for it and it fits perfectly in there. I like the way it uses the light from the Echo Dot to light up the lenses.

A Versatile Smart Speaker for Everyday Use

I’ve been using the Echo Dot (5th Gen) for a few months now, and I’ve been really impressed with it. It’s a small, unassuming device, but it’s packed with features. AND A WAY BETTER MIC then gen 4One of the things I love most about the Echo Dot is how versatile it is. I use it for everything from playing music to controlling my smart home to setting alarms. It’s also great for answering my questions and providing me with information. The Echo Dot’s sound quality is also surprisingly good. It’s not going to replace a high-end speaker system, but it’s definitely good enough for everyday listening. I especially like using it to play music in the kitchen or bedroom. and I can not stress how convenient is to not have to raise my voice even when the speaker is playing music, I did have to raise my voice on earlier modelsOverall, I’m really happy with the Echo Dot (5th Gen). It’s a great value for the price, and it’s made my life a lot easier. Here are some specific examples of how I use the Echo Dot in my everyday life:I use it to wake me up in the morning with a gradual alarm.( Mic still pics me up without having to yell at max volume)I use it to set timers when I’m cooking.I use it to play music while I’m getting ready for work or cleaning the house.I use it to control my smart home devices, such as my lights, thermostat, and security system.I use it to ask questions and get information, such as the weather forecast, news headlines, and sports scores.I use it to play games and listen to audiobooks. If you’re looking for a smart speaker that is easy to use and affordable, the Echo Dot (5th Gen) is a great option. It’s a versatile device that can be used for a variety of tasks, and it makes everyday life a little bit easier.

    Low vision user

I am using Siri to write this, so please excuse me for any strange words. This came in the mail. I didn’t open it for at least two days being worried about how complicated it was going to be the set up. Luckily Amazon sent you several emails before you get it to help you set it up and download the Alexa application And I did everything that they sent to me and then when I plugged it in I think I had to answer about two questions and I was done. I’ve never done anything so easy. No matter how analog you are if you can plug in one wire to the device and answer the questions online before you get it you’re done this Hass to be the most simple thing I’ve ever installed in my house in my lifetime. I also ordered the Switches for the lights that I used to see a little bit around the house like doorways and things and I ordered two of those and just ordered four more those you just plug in the wall and boom you’re done again this is so easy it’s funny I worried about it and I worried about nothing. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. If you want to have a challenge, do it with your eyes closed and see if you can get it done 🙂

    Amazing

I love this thing. The accessibility to music, games, information, clocks, sounds, alarms is amazing. I use this thing daily and have never regretted my purchase even once. My favorite thing to use is sleep sounds which gives you hundreds of choices to pick (my personal favorite is city sounds.) Great purchase! Highly recommend for a gift.

    Fun little Alexa

Great once it is going. Initial setup difficulties because I had so many wifis from traveling stored in my phone it didn’t automatically sync the right one (newest since I just moved, thus, so at bottom of list). Was able to set it up from a tablet no problem tho.

    So much better

Having used Google Home and Minis for the past 8 years, we had grown tired of repeating ourselves when trying to control lights, cameras, or routines. Quite often you’d ask and nothing would happen. So we switched.Set up was easy, actually done before it arrived. Our Wyze bulbs connected without issue. Alexa replies with a simple “OK” and does that is asked the first time. Lights are controlled immediately, answeres such as weather are as well. We have now moved over completely. We downsized the amount of units we use, to just 3 from 4 and it seems to work just as well if not better. Sound is better as well. Overall we’re very happy with switching.

    Love Alexa

So easy to set up compared to the other brand. Alexa will walk you through it. The app is user friendly. It’s made of quality material. I love the black color too. Alexa does everything I need it to do. Makes my home extra smart lol.

    Best sound yet!

Great sound improvements in clarity and sharpness. That is exactly what was needed. Overall this is the best sounding echo dot so far! I do wish they would offer more color choices though, something a little more vibrant. A nice orange or deep green maybe.

    I love my alexa’s

I have the old dot in my bedroom and it doesn’t work well anymore. she doesn’t follow commands that I wish she would. I’ll ask her to play a certain song and she just won’t. However, this new generation I got for my kitchen is nice. She talks too much though. I’ll ask her to set a timer (which she will) and then she’ll ask if I want to know what the weather is. Like babe, I did not ask for all that. I hope she stays good though in another year unlike the bedroom one.

    Awesome love the new generation

I absolutely love the new Echo Dot! I have a 3rd generation and it just stopped working so I bought this one and received it a few minutes ago. I had it pre setup and it worked perfectly! It’s up and running in just a few minutes. Just needed to go through initial steps but it was a breeze plugged in and started working right away. Thanks Amazon for this awesome device.
